SXSW is the leading annual conference in Austin, TX for music, film, and internet interactive. They are doing special outreach to get more representation for Hawaii creatives, and people this is a great chance!

He is hosting a free event on Monday, September 8, 6 pm, at Sam Choy’s on Nimitz. Leave me a comment if you want to get in touch with Phil directly.

Here are some highlights from his recent email:

HAWAIIAN ARTIST SUBMISSIONS TO SHOWCASE— From now until October 25, we seek contemporary music artists who can submit their music and materials via Sonicbids or directly online at http://www.sxsw.com/music to be considered for a one hour showcase and also additional shows such as parties and private events. The best music styles are rock, pop and indie, but we are also looking at slack key and traditional contemporary Hawaiian from unique artists.

HAWAIIAN FILMS FOR SUBMISSIONS—We also encourage submissions from now until December 12 deadline. Films screen in the following categories: Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Animated Short, Experimental Short, and Music Video with details at http://www.sxsw.com/film

HAWAIIAN WEBSITES FOR AWARDS—From now until December 19 Deadline. For web artists, developers and designers, there are over 20 categories to compete in for the SxSW Web Awards at http://www.sxsw.com/interactive

Shane and I plan to attend SXSW so even if you can’t attend the meeting leave a comment so we can connect with you about this event. Last year I was invited to speak at the last minute (literally – 15 minutes before with a text message via Twitter) on the Utterz panel with Chris Heuer, Chris Brogan, and Jeremiah Owyang. You never know what might happen in Austin!

Recently, after creating the “Badges” page for the PodCamp Hawaii site, we were contacted by several other Podcamp Organizers around the world. They wanted to know how we created the page and how to create the source code.

It’s easy enough if you’re a programmer or web developer. But it can be confusing and difficult if you don’t wade around in HTML all day long.

So let’s get to it.

Step 1. Create Your Graphics

Check the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Ad Unit Guidelines page for standard ad banner sizes. Obviously you can make any size banners you like but it’s generally best to stick to Unit Guidelines so your banners fit into ad spaces most sites are designed for.

If you don’t have the time or talent to create your own banners, you can use services like 99designs or Banners Mall. We recently used 99designs for our logo for Know How Cafe and were thrilled with the quality and number of designs submitted. We haven’t used Banners Mall but know people that have and have been very happy with the price and results.

Step 2. Upload Your Graphics to a Server

The logical place to stash your banners is the same server that serves your conference or event website although you can also place them on a Flickr account or other photo-sharing site. You can use FTP to create a custom directory for your badges or you can also use the image up-loader that comes with your blog site. Either way, you’ll want to get the exact file path to the graphic.

You’ll probably have an “images” directory at the root directory of your website. We like to keep directories clean and create another directory in your “images” directory with the name of your event. Then put your banners in that directory.

Let’s say your event URL is http://www.YourEvent.com. And let’s assume you created a “yourevent” directory in your images directory. And finally let’s say one of your banners is called “yourevent-125×125.jpg” which signifies this particular banner is 125 pixels wide by 125 pixels high. Based on this info, the URL to your banner would be: http://www.yourevent.com/images/yourevent/yourevent-125×125.jpg. (If you are using the uploader or Flickr, just insert the link code generated for you.)

Step 3. Create the Code for Your Banners

Now that you have your banners created, and you know the exact file path to each banner, it’s time to create the source code for your users to copy and paste into their websites.

Using the example graphic, the source would look like this:

<a href="http://www.YourEvent.com" title="Please attend our Great Event"><img src="http://www.yourevent.com/images/yourevent/yourevent-125x125.jpg" alt="Click Here to learn about our Great Event" border="0" /></a>

Let’s quickly break that down into understandable bites:

<a href="http://www.YourEvent.com" title="Please attend our Great Event">

This is the anchor tag that creates a link to your www.YourEvent.com site. Change “YourEvent.com” to be the URL of your website. The “title” parameter helps search engines know what this link is for and you should place a short description between the double quotes. NOTE: It’s very important to make sure you don’t forget the opening “<" and closing ">” or the double quotes. If you do the link will break and you’ll probably see weird code displayed on your web page.

<img src="http://www.YourEvent.com/images/yourevent/yourevent-125x125.jpg" alt="Click Here to learn about our Great Event" border="0" />

This is the code that displays your image. You should recognize the value of the “src” parameter as the URL to your image created in Step 2. The “alt” parameter helps search engines know what this graphic is referring to, just like the “title” parameter in the anchor tag. And the “border” parameter of value “0” says not to put a border around this image since it is also a clickable link.

</a>

This closes the first “anchor” tag that creates the link. If you forget this, all your text on the page following this code will be underlined as a link.

Step 4. Add the FORM code to make it easy to Copy the source code in Step 3

If you wrap your banner source code in an HTML TextArea Form tag, you can make it very easy for your users to copy the source code to paste it into their sites.

The following code will create a TextArea form element that is Readable Only. That means your site visitor won’t be able to edit the source code but will be able to select and copy the code easily:

<textarea rows="5" cols="70" readonly="readonly" onfocus="this.select();">Your Source Code Here</textarea>

You can adjust the Rows and Cols (columns) to create a TextArea size that displays all your source code. If we combine Steps 3 and 4, our finished source code looks like this. This is what you would place in your Event’s Badges page (assuming you replace the appropriate URLs and file names as outlined above:

<form><textarea rows="5" cols="70" readonly="readonly" onfocus="this.select();"><a href="http://www.YourEvent.com" title="Please attend our Great Event"><img src="http://www.yourevent.com/images/yourevent/yourevent-125x125.jpg" alt="Click Here to learn about our Great Event" border="0" /></a></textarea></form>

Step 5. Add Your Graphic

It’s nice if your users can see the graphic they are going to be adding to their site. Since you already have the code for your image, it’s a snap to add your graphic(s) to your badges page right above your TextArea source code. See the PodCamp Hawaii Badges page for examples. To display your banner above, use the following code:

<img src="http://www.yourevent.com/images/yourevent/yourevent-125x125.jpg" alt="Click Here to learn about our Great Event" border="0" />

If you want to provide even more info, you can add the following to the above code:

<br /><em>(125 x 125)</em><br />

This adds the banner size below the banner graphic in italics.

Step 6. Add it All Together

Adding together all the steps above, and using as an example the Podcamp Hawaii 125×125 banner, the code would look like this:

<img src="http://podcamphawaii.com/images/badges/2008/podcamp-hi-125.png" /><br />
<em>(125 x 125)</em><br />
<form><textarea rows="5" cols="70" readonly="readonly" onfocus="this.select();"><a href="http://2008.podcamphawaii.com" title="PodCamp Hawaii - Honolulu Convention Center - October 24-25, 2008"><img border="0" src="http://podcamphawaii.com/images/badges/2008/podcamp-hi-125.png" alt="PodCamp Hawaii - Honolulu Convention Center - October 24-25, 2008" /></a></textarea></form>

Which results in the following:

(125×125)

Step 7. Now Just Duplicate

If you have more than one badge, just duplicate and modify the final code as needed for each badge.

Leave comments and questions here in order to help others that may trip across this tutorial. And don’t forget to add your Event’s URL in your comment.

He mingled with the audience, encouraged questions throughout his presentation, and virtually demanded we interact with him. The festival is <del>16</del> 30 years old, far outlasting the typical festival life cycle of 3-5 years, as told to us earlier today by Dan McConnell. One of the key ingredients, one that was not in place in the beginning, is the combination of support for and accountability by the volunteers and the sponsors.

Imagine, a waiting list to volunteer at the festival. In my world, that is nearly unheard of! Imagine, being a primary fundraising event for nonprofit organizations, and turning away a $25,000 sponsorship from Gillette.

Yet those very restrictions are part of what guide the event. It comes from valuing several components:

The time and energy of the volunteers

The time and energy of the volunteer organizers

The money and attention of the sponsors

The time and attention of the attendees

Volunteer Secrets
Ed presented this quadrant of attributes that helps them manage their volunteers by matching them with the best fitting tasks and by weeding out those who really aren’t up to the task, this year.

Typical Sponsorship
Last year, Calphalon paid $15,000 to provide the pans for two cooking demo’s and branded shopping bags at the merchandise booth. Calphalon also included a 10% coupon to the nearby kitchen outlet store, Result: They saw a four-fold increase in foot traffic and sales “went through the roof.”

UPDATE: Ed has shared his presentation and tells me that all speaker slides will be available from HTA here after the seminar series has ended.
Download the Gilroy Garlic Festival Power Point slides. (PPT; 912 KB) Mahalo nui, Ed.

Joe Vera, CEO of Borderfest, says his event does not pay for any city services; instead they have built a strong partnership with the local community. They have over 1000 volunteers, many who come back year after year. “We give them ownership.”

They feature a different country every year. WOrk in advance with the local schools to develop a curriculum so the kids learn in advance, then experience it in person, and, telling their parents and aunties and uncles too.

Volunteers go to training twice a year. “We want the volunteers to hear the same things we are hearing as we plan the event.”

Signage is very controlled and specific, so we keep the experience for the attendees in sync with the brand.

Got to be creative and do things differently. “I’m always traveling with a camera to take pictures of ideas that we can implement.”

Give back to the community: $5.2 million impact on the community this year.

Joe’s made his presentation available on line here. Awesome Joe! Mahalo.

“Upgrading your web site” is only about 10% of what the internet has to offer today. Yet many of our Hawaii web sites are still web 1.0, not 2.0. So that means we have a long ways to go together to compete effectively. Our speaker also teaches at the University of Washington and encourages CEO’s to embrace blogging and social media. Dan’s company gets it: the most recent blog post is featured on the home page.

Festivals make your marketing dollars go farther.
We are planning an unconference, Podcamp and Wordcamp combined, that we hope to use to bring together the tech leaders from around the world and connect them with locals to share culture and knowledge. We hope the local business and tourism community will collaborate with us to showcase our beautiful state and akamai kama’aina.

The following points help tell us the full story, as festivals and events draw visitors while the internet is the key player in making it happen.

Secret Draws: Beaches, Outdoor Locations, and Information

Outside the mainland, beach/resorts are the most popular destinations

Outdoor venues by far the most popular

Travelers want local culture; what is a community all about?

What more can I say? We have this here in Hawaii, best in class.

Beach Walks has proven this over and over again. People come by searching for Hawaii and they return over and over again because we share a slice of real life – good and bad weather, local people (not just celebrities), local sites (not just perfectly staged sunsets.)

The Internet is Where It’s At. Where Are You At?

The internet is the most influential method of travel planning; can’t play it up enough.

Most travel planning self-serve online.

Cable and internet are very important to 25-44 year-old group

70% of online users also watch TV while online.

Internet spend increased over 18% from 06 to 07.

Yet we in Hawaii are behind the curve. How many of our tourism, PR, communications, and advertising execs blog or podcast or twitter? Virtually none. (Please LMK if you do and I don’t know about it! I want to give you free buzz and free hugs.)

This conference did have online payment and registration, but no other internet follow-up. There could have been follow-up to attendees, reminders or links to maps and parking info, a listing of attendees so we can network with each other, post questions for the speakers, etc.

On-site, no mention of web site resources for the conference. Power point slides were printed and enclosed in our packets which is very helpful to have; however most will be ʻōpala by 6 pm today. They could be posted on online for wider distribution, archival access, for sharing virally, and to practice sustainable green best practices.

Where is money being spent?

Festivals and events get about 10% of the total marketing spend

Traditional advertising dollars going down; cable specialty shows garnering higher rates by delivering a targeted audience.

Outdoor is the million dollar baby; spending is increasing; people like to get messages while they are outdoors.

Dan’s final advice? “Be local, think global. Concentrate on the internet.”
Since there are no sessions today focused on building internet skills and awareness for the attendees, I hereby offer my skills as a trainer. If you are in tourism and want to attend a program to see how the internet on steroids can help you, please contact me! I will organize it and guarantee you will leave ready to blow your kids’ minds about how tech savvy you became.

The time is now. You can learn to use these tools. I personally guarantee it.

This post is a summary of the conversation we had at the Hawaii Advertising Federation Conference. Please feel free to join in. Tip: Lots of links here, so right-click or control-click to open them in a new window.

Advertising online is fraught with challenges. Most web savvy consumers have learned to tune them out, as people are increasingly displeased with advertising in general. A large part is due to ads getting noisier and more ubiquitous. I was on a US Air flight recently and when it came time for drinks, and the tray tops came down covered in ads, I heard three different people complain out loud. People are tired of the intrusiveness and one-way-ness of most ad messaging. They want to have conversations that are two-way. The nice way to put this, is that advertising is due for an upgrade.

Since my expertise in online, the underlying theme today was to convey how the internet is a foreign country. It has it’s own practices, many of which are the opposite of their offline counterparts. The pace is faster, the look and feel is less polished in most cases, the interactivity is high, and there is a good chance someone is talking about you whether you know it or not. You may use email, Google, and have your own website. (That’s web 1.0). To be a successful traveler, you’ve got to leave the Holiday Inn in this foreign country and go out to meet the vocal locals. (That’s web 2.0.) The social web is filled opportunities and pitfalls for advertisers.

A Few of Our Group Metrics

Most of the 70 or so people in the room had read a blog before.

Less than 10 had left a comment on a blog.

2 had written in a blog.

About 10 belonged to LinkedIn.

1 person was on Twitter.

Benefits and Buzzwords
Your power comes from joining the conversation. At it’s most basic form, by adding a comment, you create a valued in-bound link back to your web site. You also add your point of view. You can in many cases claim thought leadership for your company, for your industry, for your customers, for your vendors. Read my post on how and when to leave blog comments.

Remember relationship marketing? The tools and apps (applications) of web 2.0 are relationship marketing on steroids. People stay longer on sites that allow them to do something other than read some text or look at a some pictures. On blogs and socnets (social networks) people click through to more pages. That translates into longer session times and more page views which are a resource you can sell, or sell ads on. And the relationships you build with your visitors? Priceless.

Accepting comments on your site allows people to tell you what they love, what’s not working so you can fixit sooner than later, ideas for new products and services, and most importantly they build trust with you. If you talk back in the comments, it shows you pay more than lip service to the concept of listening. When it comes time to buy, they will come to you first, because you have already established a relationship and possibly market leadership too. All the while you are getting free market research data, if you think of it that way.

And regardless of whether or not you (as the company) are engaged in online conversations, your brand is being discussed, debated, celebrated and parodied online. This brand democratization can be ripe with opportunity as well as fraught with bloopers. Your odds are better the more you are engaged. Here’s a “link to the YouTube Mac vs PC” ads, the real ones and the spoofs, some of which Jason Sperling showed to us at lunch today.

Social Networks
Thanks for joining our “analog” social network! Now that you’ve had practice creating a profile and sharing a few details about yourself with someone you did not previously know, you are ready to go out an join an online social network. Try one under a personal screen name to get some more practice before you start doing this on behalf of your company. And check out Mitch Joel’s blog on personal branding to get tips on how to benefit from your participation.
